“Other than the war in Iraq , the Katrina disaster, the deficit, the CIA leak, torture, stopping stem cell research, homeland security, global warming and undercutting science, we’ve yet to really feel the negative effects of the Bush administration.”—Bill Moyers
I’ve thought a lot about this lately—about how long this has gone on and how tired people are already. At a meeting today someone brought up again about how many people are working two jobs just to stay ahead of the game–both parents gone all day and home at night trying to take care of family needs—no time for community.
And yet, this is only the beginning. The real sh– hitting the fan hasn’t even started yet although hurricane Katrina was bad enough, but wait until the effect of global warming really hits, and oil gets to be a $100 a barrel which it will. Wait ’til the food trucks don’t roll into the retail outlets and there is no food to be had anywhere because no one started growing their own in time, because no one knew how to do this anymore.
Wait until the foreclosures begin on the 20 million homes that are predicted to go into foreclosure because of the way they were financed with variable interest loans with 0 down. But, the government did not force people into this situation—everybody want to “make money” off of their purchase and figured real estate was the way to do it.
I keep saying this, but I’m going to say it again: Don’t depend on government to get you out of this because there is nothing government can do but put people in internment camps just to stop the chaos and rioting when you have millions of people homeless and without food. And it is not going to make any difference who is in office, the damage has already been done.
The only thing that is going to help is for people to begin organizing now to ensure their community is secure through implementing sustainable living practices. But sustainability is not a skill that most people know how to do since we all have been raised in a waste-creating society. However, there are books and DVDs, and still an opportunity to get some college courses on this before it is too late. I urge you to begin today to learn how to be secure in your community. If parents are working then those of us that are retirees are going to have to be the “ones we’ve been waiting for.”
