Bravery and Responsibility

Mark Pilgrim wrote a very interesting and in my opinion very brave article about his personal addiction to alcohol, marijuana, and tobacco. He published his article on the internet and ended up losing his job because of it.


Addiction Is!

After watching CNN for 4 days nonstop last week, my girlfriend accused me on Friday of being addicted to it. She has never been addicted to anything, so she can be excused for confusing addiction with grief. But I spent the weekend thinking about what addiction is.

  • Addiction is always knowing where my cigarettes are.
  • Addiction is a clove cigarette and a Pepsi for breakfast.
  • Addiction is showing up for a date high.
  • Addiction is missing my mother’s birthday because I was high.
  • Addiction is taking naps in the car in the company parking lot because I was so tired I couldn’t make it through the afternoon.
  • Addiction is claiming that smoking is a social activity, but smoking alone anyway when all my smoking buddies are busy.
