The ‘Wave-Relationship’ Hypothesis

The concept of ‘awareness’ is central to reaching a deep understanding of Korzybski’s Theory of Time-binding.

Energy-binding requires energy-awareness; space-binding requires space-awareness; and time-binding requires time-awareness. This concept of ‘awareness’ appears to be very fundamental in the understanding of all phenomena in universe. Understanding is impossible without ‘awareness’—without awareness there is nothing.

But where does ‘awareness’ begin? Is it a phenomenon only associated with life? Is it a phenomenon that starts before life? These questions intrigued both Judy and me. In our thinking about ‘awareness’, ‘life’, time-binding,  ‘matter-energy’  (pronounce the hyphen), and ‘space-time’ (pronounce the hyphen), Judy and I began to believe that we might be “on to something”—perhaps a basic understanding of the relationship of ‘awareness’ to universe.

This discussion will require careful attention to understand. This is because the ideas expressed are new and to a certain extent different from our common sense view of the universe. Judy and I had been reviewing the quantum mechanics, which was the basis for much of Alfred Korzybski’s scientific work. I will discuss much of the ramifications from the quantum mechanics, because it seems to have significant correlation with ‘awareness’. I will also be reviewing some of the basic knowledge that we humans presently have in regard to universe.

For many years, we considered matter and energy to be separate entities in universe. It was through the work of Einstein and others that we came to realize and understand that matter and energy were in reality simply different states of the same phenomenon. This realization has led modern physicists to speak of the term ‘matter-energy’ (pronounce the hyphen to remind you of the connection).

Albert Einstein demonstrated that matter and energy are related to each other in a special way and are in fact equivalent. Earlier scientists had shown through the laws of nature called conservation of matter and conservation of energy, that matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed. Einstein showed us that they were in fact equivalent and related to each other through the formulation E=MC2, where E stands for energy, M for mass of matter, and C for the speed of light. Therefore, in this discussion, the new term, ‘matter-energy’, will be used throughout, and ‘matter-energy’ will be dealt with as a single entity, although one which can take significantly diverse states.

In a similar vein, space and time have long been considered to be separate entities. It was again through the work of Albert Einstein and two of his students, Minkowski and Rosenfield, that it was discovered that space and time are also diverse states of a single phenomenon. This leads to the concept of ‘space-time’ (again pronounce the hyphen), and that space and time are related in a very unique way.

To quote Gary Zukav in his description of our current view of physics:

“When an object made of ‘matter-energy’ moves through ‘space-time’ at increasing rates of speed, ‘space-time’ is distorted. Einstein and his fellow students have taught us that the appearance of ‘space-time’ is dependent upon the state of motion of the observer in ‘space-time’ .

“For example, the special theory of relativity tells us that 1) a moving object measures shorter in its direction of motion as its velocity increases, until, at the speed of light, it disappears or its ‘length becomes zero’; 2) the mass of a moving object measures more as its velocity increases, until, at the speed of light, it becomes infinite; 3) moving clocks run more and more slowly as their velocity increases, until, at the speed of light, they stop running altogether, or time stops.

“All of this is from the point of, view of the observer to whom the object is seen to be moving. To an observer traveling along with the moving object, the clock keeps perfect time, ticking off 60 seconds each minute, and nothing appears to get any shorter or any more massive. This is the real meaning of the special theory of relativity, relativity meaning relative to the observer, the point of view of the observer.”

Now this is simply a review of what is already known in physics, but I believe it is possible to put together all the fundamentals of knowledge and at the same time create a powerful and penetrating picture of time-binding, so please follow along with my thinking and see where it leads us.

Space-time is believed to be a continuous process, while ‘matter-energy’ is believed to be a discontinuous process. This means that ‘space-time’ is in the form of a continuous curve; a continuous curve that eventually closes back on itself, a closed system. It is, however, continuous in dimensions which are not readily observable to us. ‘matter-energy’ is a different type of phenomenon. It is discontinuous process. This means that ‘matter-energy’ is found in quanta, or packets, or particles, or intermittent bursts.

Those familiar with Buckminster Fuller’s science of Synergetics may recall that when continuous pull is balanced by discontinuous push we have a tensegrity. Tensegrity is the pattern that results when push and pull have a win-win relationship with each other. The pull is continuous and the push is discontinuous. The continuous pull is balanced by the discontinuous push producing an integrity of tension and compression. This creates a powerful self-stabilizing system. However, tensegrity is not the focus of this discussion.

Now while physicists for some time have studied ‘matter-energy’ and ‘space-time’ and the interaction of these two phenomena, they have neglected a third major phenomenon in universe which may be just as important as ‘matter-energy’ and ‘space-time’.

This is the complex phenomenon of order, structure, organization, pattern and form. This third phenomenon in universe is very difficult to study or understand. This is because the phenomenon is “metaphysical”. This means the phenomenon cannot be weighed or measured. This phenomenon is difficult to perceive, because it has no mass.

If one takes a house made of stone and demolishes the ‘matter-energy’ found in the pile of rubble and of the house before demolation would be the same. The pile of rubble weighs exactly the same as the house before the demolation. But obviously, the pile of stones is not a house.

It is the order, structure, organization, pattern and form of those stones that make a house. It is this concept of “order, structure, organization, pattern and form” that is so absolutely essential to the understanding of universe, especially life, especially time-binding. At present this is an area of knowledge that is most poorly understood.

How does this concept of “order, structure, organization, pattern and form” relate to ‘matter-energy’ and ‘space-time’? Although this has been touched on in some extent in dead universe by the second law of thermodynamics and the concept of entropy, it has not been adequately understood in live universe.

In the process of working on a script for a film series related to explaining Time-binding, Judy and I explored a series of metaphors that might help us to correlate this concept of “order, structure, organization, pattern and form” to ‘matter-energy’ and ‘space-time’.

Late in the evening, June 22, 1981, Judy proposed a startling hypothesis.

When or where discontinuous ‘matter-energy’ moves through or in ‘space-time’, a fluctuation is produced.

I was startled by Judy’s suggestion. This seemed to ring true to my very core. This felt like a scientific discovery.

I suggested that this fluctuation might better be represented by the term “wave”. Restating Judy’s hypothesis, with this change, we got:

Where and when ‘matter-energy’ intersects ‘space-time’, an observable
‘wave’ is produced that is representative of the “order” of the ‘matter-energy’ ‘space-time’ intersection.

If the observable wave was representative of the ‘order’ in the ‘matter-energy’ ‘space-time’ intersection then perhaps a better term was ‘wave-relationship’. And since, ‘Matter-energy’ appears to always be in motion in space and on time.

Where-when ‘matter-energy’ intersects in-on ‘space-time’, a wave-relationship is produced. This observable wave-relationship is the “order, structure, organization, pattern and form” of the “matter-energy-space-time intersection”.

After eight days of thinking of little else, Judy and I believed this hypothesis would prove corroborable, might help solve some the apparent
“paradoxes” in physics.

Recalling that ‘space-time’ is continuous and ‘matter-energy’ is discontinuous than how one might perceive a “matter-energy space-time intersection might be determined by the relationship of the observer to the observed.

We began to sketch out some schematics to help us visualize this new hypothesis. Referring to the diagram, the diagram is schematic. That means it is not an attempt to reproduce the actual structure of the intersection of ‘matter-energy’ with ‘space-time’ . This intersection is multi-dimensional. It cannot be represented even in three-dimensional space.

AWARENESS is the ability to sense the wave-relationship. In other words, if an entity can sense the wave-relationship from a “matter-energy-space-time intersection”, then that entity is “aware” of the “matter-energy-space-time intersection”. And I believe only aware of the entity through its sensing of the wave-relationship.

The following is my two-dimensional schematic from 1981.

This is a schematic of the intersection of matter-energy field with the space-time field. This intersection is an event, a wave-relationship. Wave-relationships do not unfold with the flow of time, but present themselves complete, like a finished painting on the fabric of space-time continuum. so looking at it closely we see that space-time is like a “surface” or a “medium” upon which events, or wave-relationships are perceived.

We live on that surface. All wave-relationships that we perceive occur with coordinates on the space-time continuum. That is why our frame of reference is so important in our interpretation of universe. If we are on frame of reference1 we may perceive light to be a wave. But if we are on frame of refrence2 we may perceive light to be a particle.

We must not forget that we live on the surface of the “painting”. not in it! for if we lived in it we could not perceive wave-relationships, or events. that is why every wave-relationship has space-time coordinates.-and that is why every frame of reference is unique.
AWARENESS is the ability to sense the wave-relationship. In other words, if an entity can sense the wave-relationship from a matter-energy-space-time intersection, then that entity is “aware” of the matter-energy-space-time intersection. And I believe only aware of the entity through its sensing of the wave-relationship.

I believe that within universe there are systems of matter-energy-space-time. Since all matter-energy-space-time intersections produce wave-relationships according to our hypothesis, then it appears that systems have the ability to be aware of other systems through the effect of other systems’ wave-relationships on their own wave-relationships.

Awareness, then, results because an entity detects a change in its own wave-relationship as a result of the action of other wave-relationships on it.

Let me give a simple analogy. If you strike two keys on the piano, the notes produced may either be in harmony, producing a chord, or they may be in disharmony, producing a dischord. Harmony means that one of the musical waves reinforces the other wave, and so each wave experiences an increase in the “order, structure, organization, pattern and form” because of the reinforcement of the other wave. In other words, one wave is aware of the other wave because its nearness produces an increase in its own “order, structure, organization, pattern and form”. If you have a piano available, please try this experiment in order to allow your right hemisphere to experience the feel of this. The matterenergy of the two notes struck on the piano are in reality the same, but the effect of two notes in harmony compared to two notes in disharmony is vastly different. The difference is related to this concept of “order, structure, organization, pattern and form”.

Now if we return for a moment in our thinking to what is known in our present knowledge of physics about this concept of “order, structure, organization, pattern and form”, we find the second law of thermodynamics tells us that in dead universe processes seem towards ever-increasing entropy, or “disorder, lack of structure, disorganization, patternlessness, and formlessness”. This trend towards disorder is called entropy. In addition, leading life scientists have now stated that life seems to be associated with the opposite phenomena of entropy. This is the phenomena of an increase in “order, structure, organization, pattern and form”. ‘This increase in order is called syntropy, negative entropy, or negentropy. Syntropy, negentropy or negative entropy, is simply an increase in “order, structure, organization, pattern and form”.

Now in view of our hypothesis concerning the wave-relationship, we seem to see the connection of physics to biology. The connection of matter-energy-space-time to living systems and dead systems. This hypothesis then suggests we may have the integration of physics with biology.

Now systems of matter-energy-space-time vary extensively in what they are “aware of”. Some simple systems seem aware of only simple wave relationships. Other complex systems seem aware of complex wave-relationships. I believe it is this variation between simple systems and complex systems that produces simple awareness and complex awareness. Gary Zukav states that the new physics is telling us that even photons are aware. But photons are aware of only very simple wave-relationships. Humans are the most complex systems in universe. Therefore, they are aware of the most complex wave-relationships.

The most recent work in quantum mechanics has focused on the fact that
“particles”, the most fundamental pieces of universe yet studied, seem to behave in strange ways. They seem to process information, they seem to know things, they seem to make decisions, and they seem to be aware.

I believe this is, in fact, the case, but the awareness of a photon is very simple. The photon is aware of only a very specific and limited type of wave-relationship. As systems of matter-energy-space-time become more and more complex, they simply become more and more aware of more and more types of wave-relationships produced by other systems of matter-energy-space-time. Now this concept of awareness leads us so beautifully and powerfully into Korzybski’s theory of time-binding that it produces the deepest understanding and appreciation of this concept.

Beginning with what Korzybski called energy-binders, we believe that this must be the result of awareness to energy wave-relationships, the waverelationships produced by the intersection of ultraviolet light with ‘space-time’ . The plant reaches out its leaves towards the ultraviolet light in order to produce chemical energy. In order to do this, it must be aware of the wave-relationship produced by the intersection of ultraviolet light and ‘space-time’ .

Space-binders, the animals, are aware of the effect of motion of waverelationships in ‘space-time’ . This and their own inherent ability to move through space allows the space-binders to move towards wave-relationships which are syntropic to their wave-relationships. (Again referring to the Unified Stress Concept, you will discover that adaptation of living systems is accomplished through the increase in syntropy of the system.) Therefore, to move towards “good space”, to move towards food, to move towards shelter, to move towards water, to move towards sexual mates, the space-binder must be aware of the wave-relationships of all of these systems of matter-energy-space-time. The space-binders’ awareness also allows them to recognize and move away from entropic wave-relationships, “discordant waves”, “bad space”, adversaries, etc. To accomplish this, the space-binder must be aware of the wave-relationships of entropic systems. This is accomplished through space-binding thinking, which is associative thinking (this is the way the right hemisphere in man works). In other words, the space-binder simply associates the appearance of certain wave-relationships with either good results or bad results. If the appearance of a wave-relationship is associated with entropy, discordant results, and loss, the space-binder labels that as “bad space”. If the space-binder associates the appearance of certain wave-relationships with syntropy, accordant results, and gain, he simply categorizes those wave-relationships as good space.

Time-binding is the ability to analyze the relationship of wave-relationships and their changes to time. This awareness of time allows the timebinder to predict where-when ‘matter-energy’ will intersect ‘space-time’ to produce either an entropic wave-relationship or a syntropic wave-relationship. By studying the history of wave-relationships (sensitivity to the past), the time-binder can predict when he may encounter syntropic or entropic phenomena. This sensitivity allows the time-binder to understand “cause and effect”. This type of thinking is time-binding thinking and is analytical thinking (this is located in the left hemisphere of man).

Now let us return our thinking to a more fundamental level. Time-binders are the most complex systems of matter-energy-space-time in known universe. If our hypothesis regarding the wave-relationship is the third major fundamental of the universe, then we must seek corroboration at the most fundamental level. Gary Zukav writes, “Our most advanced physicists are now focusing on the concept of relationships. The quantum mechanics shows that universe appears to be nothing but a complex and continuous web of relationships and interrelationships. That all there is in universe is relationships. As the physicist, Henry Stapp, wrote for the Atomic Energy Commission,
‘An elementary particle is not an independently-existing, un-analyzable entity. It is, in essence, a set of relationships that reach outward to other things.’

It now appears from the most reliable experiments in quantum mechanics, that what we have called a particle, or a photon, is not a thing, an object, an entity, but is a relationship between two observables. Furthermore, the mathematical picture which physicists have constructed of this ‘set of relationships’ is very similar to the mathematical picture of a ‘real’ (physical) moving particle. The motion of such a set of relationships is governed by exactly the same equation which governs the motion of a real, moving particle.”

This finding, that a “set of relationships” is governed by the same laws of nature as a particle, allows the integration of our hypothesis of wave-relationships without any disturbance of the fundamental laws of nature as previously discovered by former time-binders. In fact, many of the “paradoxes” of modern physics can be resolved by the waverelationship hypothesis. Refer back to the schematic drawing, The only “thing” we can be aware of is the wave-relationship produced by the matter-energy-space-time intersection. -There is ‘matter-energy’ in universe and ‘space-time’ in universe, but systems of matter-energy-space-time have no way of sensing directly ‘matter-energy’ or ‘space-time’ . They can only sense the “wave”. The “wave” is the relationship, hence the derivation of our term WAVE-RELATIONSHIP.

Let us review where we are at this point in the discussion. There are three fundamentals in universe. ‘space-time’ , which is believed to be continuous. ‘matter-energy’, which is discontinuous. *Where-when in or on ‘space-time’  ‘matter-energy’ intersects, a wave-relationship is produced. Systems of matter-energy-space-time are aware of the wave-relationship of other systems of matter-energy-space-time. This awareness is the resultant of the action or the effect of one system’s wave-relationship on another system’s wave-relationship.

*(We may in ‘reality be on the surface of ‘space-time’ , however being on the surface of a multi-dimensional phenomenon may seem like being in ‘space-time’ .)

The system is aware through the changes in its own wave-relation. The wave-relationship is the “order, structure, organization, pattern or form”of the matter-energy-space-time intersection. -The change within a wave-relationship is either towards less “order, structure, organization, pattern and form”– ENTROPIC; or the change can be towards more “order, structure, organization, pattern and form”—SYNTROPIC.

It is very important that you think carefully about the ramifications of these ideas. They differ so radically from our common-sense view of universe, and yet the wave-relationship hypothesis solves many problems and clears many paradoxes. We have always assumed universe to be filled with objects made of ‘matter-energy’. We have always assumed that we sense ‘matter-energy’ directly. Our new physics tells us there are no objects in universe. All objects are simply constructs of the human mind to represent reality. Reality is the wave-relationship.

Classical physics always allowed us to “observe” reality from an independent position outside universe. Such a position obstensively allowed us to “observe”the true reality of universe. The new physics corrects this view and shows that the observer cannot be independent of universe. That when we “observe”universe, we must recognize we are a part of universe, and our part in universe affects the “reality” we “observe”.

++ The “observer” is a system of matter-energy-space-time, its wave-relationship effects the wave-relationship of the system it is observing.

The classical view resulted in our believing we could study “objects in space” or even as corrected by Einstein “events in ‘space-time’ “. The classical model was predicated on the belief that all that was observed was all that there was. This led to our “objective” view of universe. The wave-relationship hypothesis explains that the “observer” only sees the wave-relationship and cannot observe the ‘matter-energy’ or ‘space-time’ at all. We must then redefine these concepts of “objects” or “events”. I have redefined EVENT as an instantaneous snapshot of infinite awareness of a matter-energy-space-time intersection. This definition of event includes all that there is in universe. This includes the matter-energy, which is not observable; the ‘space-time’ , which is not observable; and the wave-relationship, which is observable. My definition of event, therefore, is all there is in universe at the matter-energy-space-time intersection. Therefore, events are not observable. Only the wave-relationship portion of the event is observable. The classical “objects in space” are in reality only the wave-relationship of the matter-energy-space-time intersection. The “event in ‘space-time’
” is simply the wave-relationship of a matter-energy-space-time intersection. My new definition of event contains all there is in universe. The wave-relationship and the unobservable ‘matter-energy’ and the unobservable ‘space-time’ . I have expressed this mathematically, using the differential calculus, as follows:

Now this concept of event includes, of course, the wave-relationship, which is the “order, structure, organization, pattern and form” of the event. This is not in this mathematical formula because the wave-relationship is “metaphysical” (without measure).

Now since events for the most part, the ‘matter-energy’ and the ‘space-time’ , cannot be observed, then “true” physics is the resultant of the study of wave-relationships. All knowledge is, therefore, based upon our understanding of the third fundamental of universe. And yet, until the wave-relationship hypothesis, we did not even know that there was a third fundamental of universe. We have simply believed that our understanding of universe was an understanding of the true, objective universe. The wave-relationship hypothesis explains that we cannot see universe. We can only see the wave-relationship produced by the dance of universe.

The major postulate of the wave-relationship hypothesis is the wave-relationship is “order, structure, organization, pattern and form”. Always remember this point. It is essential to understanding the following discussion.

Since we cannot observe universe, only the wave-relationship of universe, then knowledge is the study of wave-relationships. Gary Zukav explains,
“From quantum mechanics, we know that what happens to the observed system in quantum mechanics experiments is expressed mathematically as a correlation between observables. Yet we know that the observed system is perceived as a particle—a photon. Said another way, the photon is a relationship between two observables. This is a long, long way from the building-brick theory of elementary particles. For centuries scientists have tried to reduce reality to indivisible entities. Imagine how surprising and frustrating it was for them to come so close (a photon is very elementary) only to discover that elementary particles don’t have an existence of their own! Again, to quote Stapp, ‘An elementary particle is not an independently-existing, unanalyzable entity, it is, in essence, a set of relationships that reach outward to other things.’

Things are not correlated in nature. In nature, things are as they are. Period. ‘Correlation’ is a concept which we use to describe connections which we perceive. There is no word, ‘correlation’, apart from people. There is no concept, ‘correlation’, apart from people. This is because only people use words and concepts.

‘Correlation’ is a concept. Sub-atomic particles are now known to be correlations. If we weren’t here to make them, there would not be any concepts, including the concept of ‘correlation’. In short, if we weren’t here to make them, there wouldn’t be any particles!”

In other words, “correlations” occur only to the “observer”. The “observer”simply sees the wave-relationships from the intersection of matter-energy-space-time. These wave-relationships are the relationships Zukav talks about. When an observer is aware of relationships, the observer has produced a “correlation”.

Correlation is defined by me to be simply the sum of all relationships that an “observer” is aware of. An “observer” is any system of matter-energy-space-time that is aware. Correlation can be expressed mathematically as follows:

Stated another way, correlations are simply the wave-relationships that an “observing” system is aware of. Since we humans study universe, then it is easy to understand why a “photon” is simply a correlation. A “photon”is our awareness of the wave-relationship of the matter-energy-space-time intersection that produces the “observable photon”.

Now before proceeding with this discussion, I wish to introduce the concept of hierarchy. Universe is hierarchical. Particles make up electrons and protons and neutrons. Protons, neutrons and electrons make atoms. Atoms make molecules. Molecules make chemical compounds. Chemical compounds make proteins. Proteins make organelles. Organelles make cells. Cells make tissues. Tissues make organs. Organs make organisms. Organisms make groups of organisms. Groups of organisms make organizations. Organizations make communities. Communities make states. States make nations. Nations make civilizations. Civilizations cover the world. Worlds make solar systems. Solar systems involve suns. Suns are found in galaxies. Galaxies move in super-galaxies, etc. Universe is hierarchical. This very important concept is completely explained through the concept of the wave-relationship. Again, the major postulate of the wave-relationship hypothesis states, the wave-relationship is order, structure, organization, pattern and form.

Science, knowledge, understanding, then is simply the result of a hierarchical structure of correlations.

Information, is then defined by me, as the sum of all correlations from zero awareness to infinite awareness. Information is stated mathematically as follows:

The relationship that information has to correlations is repeated by the relationship between knowledge and information. Knowledge is simply the sum of all information which the observer is aware of. This can be expressed mathematically as follows:

And continuing in our hierarchical pattern, wisdom is related to knowledge in the same way knowledge is related to information, and information is related to correlations. Wisdom is the sum of all knowledge which the observer is aware of. Wisdom can be stated mathematically as follows:

With these formulations, we see the emergence of the same hierarchical structure that exists in universe. Because wisdom, knowledge, information and correlations are the resultant of awareness of universe, they, too, must obviously be hierarchical in structure.

You may want to reread the correspondence to this point, in order to firmly set it in your mind. You may need to meditate and think about this to see the full significance. What we are seeing here is the emergence of the major fundamental of universe. The first fundamental is ‘space-time’ . The second is ‘matter-energy’. And the third is wave-relationship, the hierarchical fundamental, the “order, structure, organization, pattern and form” of universe.

At first, it seems so difficult for us to understand this third fundamental. The third fundamental is so complex and so varying in structure. This is the result of its hierarchical structure. It is this fundamental of universe which gives universe its hierarchical structure. All that exists in universe are EVENTS.  All EVENTS are perceived as wave-relationships. We can only be ware of wave-relationships. As we become aware of wave-relationships we produce correlations. As we become aware of correlations we produce information. As we become aware of information we produce knowledge. As we become aware of knowledge we produce wisdom.

AWARENESS is a phenomenon resultant from the matter-energy-space-time intersection. Awareness is the result of the effect of the wave-relationship on other wave-relationships. Awareness begins in universe when the first system of matter-energy-space-time “observes” the wave-relationship of a matter-energy-space-time intersection. With the beginning of awareness comes reaction. Reaction begins with the first intersection of one system of matter-energy-space-time with another system of matter-energy-space-time. Awareness and reactivity have long been considered the characteristics of life. We have no choice now, but to understand that awareness and reactivity begin with the birth of universe and long before the emergence of systems of matter-energy-space-time which we call living.

Another postulate of the wave-relationship hypothesis is that all ‘matter-energy’ in ‘space-time’ is in motion. Motion of  ‘matter-energy’  in, through or on ‘space-time’ is defined by most physicists as process. Process is defined as ‘matter-energy’ in motion in, on or through ‘space-time’ . The result of this ‘matter-energy’ in motion in ‘space-time’ is the production of wave-relationships. Process in universe is organized into systems of ‘matter-energy’ in motion in ‘space-time’ . These systems or processes are aware of other systems or processes.

For dead universe, the major law of nature is the second law of thermodynamics. It basically states that all wave-relationships (the “order, structure, organization, pattern and form”) of dead processes, systems, are decaying. The amount of decay is defined as ENTROPY.

Live universe is simply those processes, systems, in which the wave-relationships are becoming more complex; in other words, more “ordered, structured, organized, patterned and formed”. This increase in order of live process is called syntropy, negative entropy, or negentropy.

Dead universe is entropic process. Live universe is syntropic process.

Adaptation (refer ‘to the Unified Stress Concept) is simply the interaction of a live process that results in an increase in syntropy. Maladaptation is an interaction between live process and its environment, which results in the production of entropy.

Live universe (all syntropic processes) adapts through AWARENESS.

It appears that life begins at the level of the crystal. Although for years the crystal was not considered to be living, careful examination shows crystal is syntropic process. Therefore, crystal is living process. Crystal adapts through awareness of matter. By being aware of matter, crystal can organize similar matter to itself to create crystal growth. To utilize Korzybski’s concept of the classes of life, I would state that this in reality is the first class of life, although Korzybski did not realize this. Therefore, crystal is the first class of life, the matter-binders.

The second class of life, then, would be that class of life which is aware of energy. The plants adapt, increase their order, syntropy through their awareness of matter and energy. The plants are energy-binders, or to be explicit, they are ‘matter-energy’ binders.

The third class of life is the class of life that is aware of space. They adapt, increase their order-syntropy through their awareness of space. They are the space-binders, or to be explicit, the matter-energy-space-binders.

The fourth class of life is that class of life which is aware of time. They adapt through awareness of time. They increase their order – syntropy through the awareness of time. This is what Korzybski calls time-binders, but to be more explicit, it is that class of life which is matter-energy-space-time-binders.

As I mentioned in our telephone conversation, there is a fifth class of life which must emerge if our human species is to survive—this is the class of life I call Synergans. The fifth class of life is that class of life that is aware of awareness. This is the class of life that adapts (increases its order or syntropy) through the awareness of awareness . The awareness of awareness allows synergans to organize themselves into synergy. To utilize Korzybski’s terminology, the synergans would be called the awareness-binders; or more explicitly, the matter-energy-space- time-awareness-binders .

Therefore, it appears that the ancient Eastern esoteric philosophies were right. The fundamental in universe is mind, or awareness. First there is awareness, then energy, then matter, then life, then mind, then awareness of awareness. This demonstrates the self-reflexive nature of universe. Self-reflexiveness, a major discovery of Alfred Korzybski, is discussed at length in his book,.Science and Sanity

Well, you can see our dilemma. Judy and I must assimilate this new knowledge. And yet this new knowledge is even emerging as I dictate this letter. The exercise of writing on the time-binding script has produced the largest number of discoveries that Judy and I have yet to date created. However, the importance of this most recent jump in knowledge seems so staggering and potentially so all -encompassing, that I felt it was absolutely essential to interrupt our second rewrite and communicate this new knowledge to you. I believe that much of this must be incorporated into the film series. It is too fundamental and too important to be neglected. However, we will need to create our work in such a way that the resultant can be effectively communicated.

This concept, when integrated into the knowledge produced within the Unified Stress Concept, allows for an unbelievably-comprehensive understanding of universe, life and humanity. We humans are the most “aware” of all syntropic process in known universe. Time-binding gives us the ability to observe processes over time. Through such observation we can determine whether these processes are entropic or syntropic. We can further predict when entropic and syntropic processes will occur. We can even manufacture entropic and syntropic processes. We have the ability to organize and structure universe as we desire. We have the ability to create universe.
